Post Apocalyptic
70,000
This 1,001 sq ft, four-room HDB flat in Canberra has been transformed into an unconventional home that boldly embraces a post-apocalyptic industrial aesthetic while maintaining a strong commitment to sustainability. The vision was to create a space that is rugged, raw, and functional — a home that tells a story of resilience and ingenuity while celebrating environmental consciousness.
Unlike typical interiors that aim to hide structural or mechanical elements, this home showcases them as design features. The stainless-steel-clad front door, grey concrete walls and floors, and cinderblock accents immediately set a utilitarian, bunker-like tone. Exposed pipes, air-conditioning ducts, and oversized industrial switches further reinforce the post-apocalyptic narrative, giving the home a distinctive, grunge-inspired personality that is both edgy and immersive.
The décor complements this industrial canvas with a carefully curated selection of accessories and furniture. Weathered metal furnishings, shipping hooks, and industrial pendant lamps add texture and visual interest, while high-contrast colors such as red, yellow, blue, and black inject energy into the otherwise muted palette. Personal hobbies and interests, such as plants and archery equipment, are seamlessly integrated, ensuring that the home remains functional and reflective of the occupants’ lifestyle rather than simply being a design statement.
Sustainability and longevity were key considerations in the design, which inspired a DIY and custom-built approach to several furniture pieces. The custom dining table is a striking example: its steel rebar legs, typically used in construction, are encased within the poured concrete floor in a radial pattern, forming both a durable structural element and a visually arresting centerpiece. This approach reflects the philosophy that anything with moving parts will eventually need repair or replacement, emphasizing practicality without compromising on aesthetics.
The home strikes a delicate balance between industrial grit and human warmth. While it feels rugged and utilitarian at first glance, soft ambient lighting and carefully chosen accessories create pockets of comfort and intimacy. Every corner, surface, and detail has been thoughtfully considered, turning what could have been a stark, cold environment into a dynamic, lived-in space that is both expressive and inviting.
This project exemplifies the marriage of creativity, sustainability, and individuality. It is not just a home — it is a statement, an experiment in design, and a reflection of a bold, adventurous spirit. The space encourages its occupants to embrace imperfection, celebrate resourcefulness, and live unapologetically. In every aspect, from its concrete floors to its DIY furniture, this post-apocalyptic industrial home demonstrates that even in the harshest of aesthetics, life and warmth can thrive.
